Synopsis

His first Triple-A season with the Batts over, Goro returns to Japan. He isn't chosen for the national team's World Cup training camp, but joins the Okinawa camp as a batting-practice pitcher. At the opening ceremony he walks straight up to major-leaguer Kojiro and challenges him: "When you feel like taking free batting practice, name me first." Squaring off against players who stand at the summit of the world game, Goro experiments relentlessly to prove his worth. The seeds of a new out pitch, the "gyro fork," begin to sprout in this volume opening the World Cup arc.

Though only a batting-practice pitcher behind the scenes, Goro refuses to give an inch against Japan's sluggers like Kojiro and Matsuo, asserting himself with his fastball. Realizing that raw velocity alone won't cut it against world-class hitters, he takes a pioneer's advice and starts working to master a new out pitch: the "gyro fork." Through the camp the national players can no longer ignore his ability. Though not an official member, Goro firmly grabs a foothold onto the world stage and lays the groundwork for his next leap forward.
