Synopsis

The World Cup final, Japan versus the USA. The game grinds into extra innings, and Goro, pitching since the eighth, and Gibson, forcing his way onto the mound despite his grave illness, wage a duel where neither gives an inch. In the top of the sixteenth, Japan gets a runner on third with one out and Sato at the plate, but fails to break through. In the bottom half, Goro faces a bases-loaded, no-out crisis, and the batter stepping in is Gibson Jr. A son chasing his father's back, a father pitching with his very life, and at the end of this death match awaits either a smiling farewell or a cruel finish.

At the end of the death match, Gibson pitches to the finish battered and broken, and the USA takes the World Cup final. Goro digs in through the bases-loaded, no-out crisis but runs out of strength and cannot wrestle away the win. Even so, the two aces pour out everything and end their exchange without regret. After the game, the illness-ravaged Gibson trades quiet words with Goro and bids farewell with a smile. Their long-fated rivalry is sealed by a respect that transcends who won. Father and son, Goro and Gibson, each story reaches a turning point in this moving final volume.
