Synopsis

The frenzy of the culture festival fades and the SOS Brigade's everyday life returns. There's an uneasy mystery caper reminiscent of an island murder case, idle after-school chatter in the clubroom, and a gradual mapping of where Kyon stands with Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi. Jerked around by Haruhi's every whim, Kyon nonetheless starts to feel oddly at home in these noisy days. More than flashy phenomena, it's the crooked little refuge called the SOS Brigade that grows dear—a quiet run-up to the "Disappearance."

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
Rather than a grand world-rewrite, this volume patiently stacks up the members' relationships and foreshadowing. The hint of change behind Yuki Nagato's blank face, the weight of Mikuru's muttered "classified information," Koizumi's talk of closed space and the Celestials. Kyon grumbles outwardly but realizes he can no longer imagine a daily life without Haruhi. Then, in December, a faint anomaly in Nagato is quietly planted as the trigger for the next volume's "Disappearance," where the whole world turns upside down—leaving an ominous afterglow.
